Three Brands, Three Tiers — An Honest Comparison
I'm Omar Jacobo, EPA 608 certified (#2396328), owner of Frosty's HVAC. One of the most common questions I get from homeowners across Farmers Branch, Coppell, Irving, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and Grapevine is: "Which brand should I get?" I install Goodman, Carrier, and Trane — and I'm going to give you an honest comparison of all three.
I don't push one brand over another. Each one has a purpose, and the right choice depends on your budget, your home, and how long you plan to live there. We've organized them into three tiers to make it simple.
Goodman — Our "Stay Cool" Tier
Price range: $8,000–$19,000 (varies by tonnage)
Efficiency: 15 SEER2, single-stage
What You Get
Goodman is the value leader in residential HVAC. These are reliable, well-built systems manufactured by Daikin (one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world). A 15 SEER2 single-stage system does exactly what it's supposed to do: cool your home. It runs at one speed — full power — and cycles on and off to maintain temperature.
Warranty
Goodman offers a strong manufacturer parts warranty — typically 10 years on major components when properly registered. With our Stay Cool tier, we add a 1-year labor warranty from Frosty's HVAC.
Who Should Choose Goodman
- Homeowners on a tighter budget who need a dependable replacement
- Landlords or investors who need a quality system at the best price point
- Homes under 2,000 sq ft where a single-stage system provides adequate comfort
- Homeowners who plan to sell in the next 3–5 years — you get a reliable new system without over-investing
Honest Downsides
Single-stage means it's either running full blast or off — there's no in-between. This can create slight temperature swings (a degree or two) and less precise humidity control compared to higher-tier systems. It's also louder than dual-stage or variable-speed equipment because it always runs at maximum output.
Carrier — Our "Stay Frosty" Tier (Most Popular)
Price range: $10,000–$21,000 (varies by tonnage)
Efficiency: 18 SEER2, dual-stage
What You Get
Carrier is the brand Willis Carrier literally invented modern air conditioning around. These systems have over a century of engineering behind them. Our Stay Frosty tier uses Carrier's 18 SEER2 dual-stage equipment, which means the system has two operating speeds: a lower speed for mild days (about 70% capacity) and full speed for the hottest days.
The practical result? Your system runs at the lower, quieter speed most of the time — maybe 80% of summer hours. It only kicks up to full power when it's 100+ degrees outside and your home needs maximum cooling. This translates to better humidity control, more consistent temperatures room to room, and noticeably lower energy bills.
What's Included Beyond the Equipment
The Stay Frosty tier includes more than just a better brand of equipment:
- Frosty Thermostat (our smart thermostat)
- Ductwork inspection and sealing (up to 5 connections) — this alone can improve your system's efficiency by 10–15%
- New disconnect box, electrical whip, overflow condensate shutoff
- 2-year labor warranty from Frosty's HVAC
Who Should Choose Carrier
- Homeowners who want the best balance of quality, features, and price — this is our most popular tier for a reason
- Two-story homes where temperature consistency between floors matters
- Homeowners who value quiet operation (dual-stage is significantly quieter than single-stage)
- Anyone planning to stay in their home 5+ years and who wants lower monthly energy bills
Honest Downsides
The price step up from Goodman is real — you're looking at roughly $2,000–$4,000 more depending on tonnage. For homeowners on a strict budget, that difference is significant. Also, dual-stage components are more complex than single-stage, so if a repair is needed 8–10 years down the road, parts may cost slightly more.
Trane — Our "It's A Frosty Life" Tier
Price range: $14,000–$26,000 (varies by tonnage)
Efficiency: 20+ SEER2, variable speed
What You Get
Trane's variable-speed inverter systems are the pinnacle of residential air conditioning. Instead of cycling on and off (single-stage) or switching between two speeds (dual-stage), a variable-speed system continuously adjusts its output — anywhere from 25% to 100% — to match the exact cooling load your home needs at any given moment.
The result is remarkable: your home stays within 1 degree of your set temperature, humidity levels are precisely controlled, and the system is whisper-quiet because it's usually running at 30–40% capacity. You'll barely know it's running. Energy efficiency is the highest available — 20+ SEER2 means significantly lower electricity bills, especially during our long Texas summers where the AC runs 12–16 hours a day.
What's Included Beyond the Equipment
- Frosty Thermostat
- Full ductwork inspection and sealing — not just 5 connections, but a complete evaluation
- Vibration isolation mounts for ultra-quiet operation
- 1-year Frosty Club membership included ($99 value)
- 5-year labor warranty from Frosty's HVAC — the longest we offer
Who Should Choose Trane
- Homeowners who want the absolute best comfort and efficiency available
- Larger homes (2,500+ sq ft) where variable-speed technology makes the biggest difference
- Anyone who works from home and values quiet, consistent comfort all day
- Homeowners who plan to stay in their home long-term and want maximum energy savings over 15–20 years
- People who simply want the best and are willing to invest in it
Honest Downsides
Cost is the obvious one. You're paying a premium — $6,000–$7,000 more than the Goodman tier for the same tonnage. Variable-speed inverter boards are sophisticated electronics, and if one fails outside the warranty period, replacement parts are expensive. That said, Trane's reliability track record is excellent, and the 5-year labor warranty we include provides substantial peace of mind.
Side-by-Side Comparison
- Efficiency: Goodman 15 SEER2 | Carrier 18 SEER2 | Trane 20+ SEER2
- Compressor type: Single-stage | Dual-stage | Variable speed
- Noise level: Standard | Quieter | Whisper-quiet
- Temperature consistency: Good | Better | Best (within 1 degree)
- Humidity control: Basic | Good | Excellent
- Energy savings vs. 10-year-old system: 20–30% | 35–45% | 50–60%
- Our labor warranty: 1 year | 2 years | 5 years
- Ductwork included: No | Inspection + 5 seals | Full inspection + sealing
- Price range: $8,000–$19,000 | $10,000–$21,000 | $14,000–$26,000
All Three Tiers Include
Regardless of which brand you choose, every Frosty's HVAC installation includes: our Frosty Thermostat (smart thermostat), new disconnect box, electrical whip, overflow condensate shutoff, condensate drain treatment, copper line inspection (replaced if needed), city permit, full cleanup, and haul-away of your old equipment.
My Personal Recommendation
For most homeowners I work with in the Farmers Branch, Coppell, and Irving area, the Stay Frosty (Carrier) tier hits the sweet spot. You get meaningful upgrades in comfort, efficiency, and noise level without the premium price of variable-speed. The dual-stage compressor and included ductwork sealing deliver a noticeable improvement over a basic system.
That said, I've installed plenty of Stay Cool (Goodman) systems for budget-conscious homeowners who are thrilled with them, and I've installed It's A Frosty Life (Trane) systems for homeowners who tell me it's the best home improvement investment they've ever made. There's no wrong answer — just the right answer for your situation.
